Question:
As salaam alaikum, one of my friend is very young & she got early menopause & she is prone to osteoporosis. She wants to get hormone therapy. Is it halal to get hormone therapy done?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Hormone therapy, in the case of menopause, is essentially the replacement of estrogen or progestogen hormones that are lost during the menopausal transition. –[See: https://menopause.org/patient-education/menopause-topics/hormone-therapy]
Though a physiological transition, menopause tends to be harder on younger women than on those experiencing it in their late 40s or early 50s. Women in early menopause tend to experience more bone loss, with a higher lifetime risk of fracture. They are also at higher risk for vaginal atrophy, heart disease, and osteoporosis due to spending more years of their lives without the benefits of estrogen.
Medical experts recommend hormone therapy for women going through premature or early menopause, as it can help prevent these symptoms.
Treatment, for menopausal symptoms, is delivered either systemically (released into the bloodstream) or locally (to the affected area). Systemic therapy can be given via pills, skin patches, gels, injections, or sprays. Local therapy (for example, for vaginal dryness) may be applied directly via vaginal rings, creams, or tablets.
In younger, healthy women without contraindications, the risks associated with MHT are small; it is therefore considered a promising treatment for early menopause.—[See: https://www.yalemedicine.org/news/early-and-premature-menopause]
Hence, considering the above information, if your friend is very young with early menopause and is prone to osteoporosis as a result, then it will be permissible for her to get hormone therapy to treat the early menopause.[1]
Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
