Question:

Assalamu alaykum,

I have a haircut which is not equal on top and sides, if I keep it long, it looks unclean and messy, I've tried my best to use oil and gel to avoid cutting it unequal but it still looks unclean however my unequal haircut does not look similar to disbelievers, neither is it faded and I try to get the largest number on the sides to avoid it looking makrooh (or haram). I've heard some scholars say it's at its most makrooh tanzihi.

However, others say it is makrooh tahrimi, could you please shed some light on this issue, as I fail to read a certain answer?

JazakAllah

Answer:

These styles in which the hair is cut uneven are not permissible for Muslim men since they are against the teachings of the Prophet (s.a.w), which he gave regarding the head. In this regard, it is narrated from Abdullah Bin Umar (R.A) that the Messenger of Allah strictly prohibited one from Qaz’a. [1]

"Imam Nawawi says: Qaz’a means to shave some part of the head and leave the other part. The ulama have unanimously agreed that it is disliked to shave parts of the head, except if it is for a medical reason. [2]
