What Is The Ruling On Making False Allegations Against Someone?

Question:

Assalamoualaikoum

I would like to speak to a Mufti on islamic ruling where a false allegation is put forward to someone.

Context

My fathers uncle approached him a couple of years ago with regards to the inheritance if land abroad which needs to be resolved.  My father said he will assist his uncle and do what he requests.

When they went abroad all actions were carried out by them both and any documents signed were by the uncle.

Fast forward 2025 and around Aug/Sept the uncle starts falsely accusing my father of going behind his back and putting the land in his name.  My father knows nothing of this and is categorically denying these allegations but the uncle just doesnt listen and insists he has done wrong.

other events took place in between and it had been proven my father was telling the truth and the uncle was lying and he has spoken to others.  His wife also has been lying saying to people I was being disrespectful and shouting when this was not the case.

My understanding is in Islam false allegation is a major sin.

1. False allegation against my father of stealing supposed land.

2. False allegation against myself on being disrespectiful to and elder leading to others having a different perception of me.

How is best to resolve this?

If I could have a call with a Mufti it will be greatly appreciated.

Jazakallah

It is a serious sin in Islam to knowingly slander a fellow Muslim.[1] Lying in general is an evil act which a believer must avoid.[2]

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ”If anyone’s intercession intervenes as an obstacle to one of the punishments prescribed by Allah, he has opposed Allah; if anyone disputes knowingly about something which is false, he remains in the displeasure of Allah till he desists, and if anyone makes an untruthful accusation against a Muslim, he will be made by Allah to dwell in the corrupt fluid flowing from the inhabitants of Hell till he retracts his statement. [Sunan Abi Dawud 3597][3]

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) also said, “It is obligatory for you to tell the truth, for truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to Paradise, and the man who continues to speak the truth and endeavours to tell the truth is eventually recorded as truthful with Allah, and beware of telling of a lie for telling of a lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell-Fire, and the person who keeps telling lies and endeavours to tell a lie is recorded as a liar with Allah.” [Sahih Muslim 2607c] [4]

It can be understandably very difficult and upsetting for a believer when somebody slanders them. Take solace in the fact that even the Prophet (ﷺ) suffered through such tribulations many times, including and incident when an individual would slander and defame the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) a great deal, and this person would refuse to take heed and desist even after Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) rebuked them.[5] It is beyond the ability of anyone, even the Prophet (ﷺ), to guide anyone to the straight path; you can only try your best to present the truth and make sincere du’a, and then leave the rest to Allah (ﷻ) and His infinite kindness and wisdom.[6]

Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
