Question:
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ,
I had a question regarding the board game chess. My question was is chess haram to play?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
It is Makroohe Tahrimi (reprehensively disliked) to play chess [1].
Please see the quotes below:
Ali رضي الله عنه said: “Chess is the gambling of non-Arabs. [2]
Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari رضي الله عنه said: “Only a sinner plays chess.” [3]
Abu Saeed Al-Khudri رضي الله عنه disliked the playing of chess. [4]
Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
