Question:

Do hanafis pray isha moon or other way of calculating?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The Hanafi Madhab determines the time for the Isha prayer based on the disappearance of the Shafaq (twilight) after sunset, not by the emergence of the moon. However, there is a well-known difference within the Hanafi Madhab regarding what exactly constitutes the end of twilight. The opinion followed (Fatwa of the Madhab) is that the time for Isha begins after the disappearance of Shafaq Ahmar (the red twilight) in accordance with the opinion of Imams Abu Yusuf and Muhammad.

Imams Abu Yusuf and Muhammad

They held the view that Isha begins with the disappearance of the red twilight (Shafaq Ahmar) which is earlier than the disappearance of the white twilight. Shafaq Ahmar is the reddish glow that appears after sunset and disappears before the white twilight (the reddish color that remains in the western sky after sunset). This is also the opinion of the majority of scholars from other schools. Shafaq Ahmar is the reddish glow that appears in the western sky after the sun sets. It is the redness that lingers on the horizon. It is a clear, red or pinkish band of light that is visible above the horizon. This redness gradually fades as the sun moves further below the horizon. This phase lasts for a period after sunset and is the first color to appear and then disappear as night progresses.

Imam Abu Hanifa’s opinion

According to his opinion, the time for Isha begins when the white twilight (Shafaq Abyad) disappears from the sky, which is the lingering white light after the red twilight fades. This can be quite late in some seasons and latitudes. Shafaq Abyad is the white light that remains in the sky after the red twilight (Shafaq Ahmar) has disappeared. After the red band fades, a faint, diffuse white or grayish light persists along the horizon. This white light is less vivid and more subtle than the earlier red glow. This phase can last much longer than the red twilight, especially in higher latitudes or during certain seasons. It has been narrated that Imam Abu Hanifah later retracted from this opinion.
