Question:

Can i give zakat to my mother in law who is a widow? She is receiving 10,000rs a month from her husband's pension. She has 5 sons 3 of which are earning and send her money?

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer:

Bismillah

Zakaat is due upon a person when they become the owner of a specific amount (nisab) of wealth after deducting debts and a year has elapsed on that wealth.  The nisab of zakaat for gold is 7.5 tolas (87.48 g) and for silver it is 52.5 tolas (612.35 g). Zakaat is also due upon a person who has money upto the amount equivalent to 52.5 tolas (612.35g) of silver.  If your mother-in-law meets any of this criteria it will be impermissible for her to receive zakaat and she would be blameworthy for not paying zakaat on her own wealth and assets.
