Question:

Message Body:
Could you explain how to properly perform Madhmadhah (rinsing the mouth) and Istinsahaq (rinsing the nose)? Is it necessary to use your fingers to distribute the water to the corners of the mouth, or can you use your tongue and the nose as well?

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

It is Sunnah to rinse the mouth and nose 3 times whilst performing Wudu. It is Sunnah to use Miswaak in the mouth and the finger can be used as a substitute if you do not have a Miswaak. There is no requirement to push the finger to all corners of the mouth, it is enough to push the water using the cheeks and tongue.

Whilst rinsing the nose, it is important to inhale the water enough so that it reaches the soft part of the nose and bone. The small finger of the left hand can be used to clean inside the nose.
