Question:
How do I deal with doubts regarding the validity of my repentance, specifically the fear that because I think it is likely I will commit the sin again I feel unable to make a firm resolve to not commit the sin I am repenting for. Is my tawba valid?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
In relation to your question, every form of repentance when done with sincerity and with pure intentions not to return to that sin, will be accepted.
For repentance to be accepted and the form which repentance comes in:
- You have to repentance sincerely from the heart
- Intend into action never to return to that sin
- Have full belief that Allah is Most Forgiving, and he does not turn away his slave who calls out to him.
You have to make a firm intention not to return to that sin again and seek avenues which will help you refrain from that sin. This can be by talking to a specialist in this field, such as a qualified and experienced scholar who specialises in these matters. He would be able to provide you with procedures and methods to help stay away from that sin and provide remedies for the heart and soul. It has also been advised from various narrations of the Prophet (PBUH) to engage in fasting and remembrance of Allah to help keep the lustful cravings for committing sin in check.
Tawbah will only be valid if you firmly repent with sorrow with an intention never to return to performing that sin. Your repentance is valid if you make practical and intentional steps to avoid committing that sin again.
