Question:
Is it haram to do something your parents said no to?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
“Say, ˹O Prophet,˺“Come! Let me recite to you what your Lord has forbidden to you: do not associate others with Him ˹in worship˺. ˹Do not fail to˺ honor your parents. Do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for you and for them. Do not come near indecencies, openly or secretly. Do not take a ˹human˺ life—made sacred by Allah—except with ˹legal˺ right.1 This is what He has commanded you, so perhaps you will understand.”[Surah Anaam v.135]
Being kind and listening to one’s parents is an essential part of being a believer.
The only circumstance in which one can disobey their parents is if the parents were to tell their children to disobey Allah swt and something which would cause corruption. Even in that scenario it should not be done in a disrespectful manner but with wisdom.
Ali reported: The Prophet, peace, and blessings be upon him, said, “There is no obedience to anyone if it is disobedience to Allah. Verily, obedience is only in good conduct.” [Sahih Bukhari Number 6830]
