Question:

Is it permissible for ladies to apply black mendhi to finger nails and hands? Some people say it’s tashabuh bil kufaar. Because it’s similar to nail polish and tattoos.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

It is permissible for women to apply black mendhi to their hands and feet, so long as the imprint form the henna doesn’t contain any animate imagery like faces or bodies1, beyond that any form of patterns like floral designs are permissible.

However, one should be weary when using black henna, as it is used widely with chemical additives, one should ensure the ingredients are pure and allowed to be used, as well as nothing is added to affect the porous nature of the henna.

As for tashabuh, then this does not apply to henna, as it is proven from the Sunnah and books of jurisprudence.
