Question:

I have come across this regarding Surah Mulk, it mentions reading a certain number of times and what benefits there are, is there any truth to this.

Also, when would I read Surah Mulk, I have heard some brothers you can read any time after maghrib and some brothers say after Isha Surah Mulk should be read. Which one is correct?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Masud( رضى الله عنه ) said:

Surah Mulk is the deliverer, it prevents the punishment of the grave with the permission of Allah from the punishment of the grave. A man would be approached from his head side, so it would say, “you do not have any path to him, indeed he has proclaimed with Surah Mulk”, and he would be approached by his legs so his feet would say: “There is no way for you onto him, indeed he used to stand with me, (to recite) Surah Mulk. Hence, it will prevent him with the permission of Allah from the punishment of the grave. And Surah Mulk is mentioned in the Torah; Whoever reads it in a night surely he has increased and done well.[1]

Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Abbas( رضى الله عنهما )said:

“One of the companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)pitched a tent on a grave without knowing that it was a grave. Suddenly he heard a person from the grave reciting Surah al-Mulk till he completed it. So he went to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)and said: ‘Oh Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم)of Allah, I pitched my tent on a grave without realizing that is was a grave. Then suddenly I heard a person from the grave reciting Surah Mulk till he completed it.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘It is the defender, it is the deliverer, it delivers from the punishment of the grave”.[2]

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah( رضى الله عنه ) related Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“Indeed there is a Surah in the Quran of thirty Ayat, which intercedes for a man until he is forgiven. It is (Surah) Tabarak Allazi BiyadihilMulk”. [3]

Sayyiduna Narrated Jabir Ibn Abdullah( رضى الله عنهما )said:

أنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كانَ لا يَنامُ حَتّى يَقْرَأ الم تَنْزِيلُ السَّجْدَةُ وتَبارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ المُلْكُ The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم)would not sleep until he recited Alif Lam Mim Tanzil and: Tabarak Allazi BiyadihilMulk.[4]

Reciting Surah Mulk after Maghrib or after Isha gives the same benefit and reward as reciting it just before going to sleep since it is encouraged to be read during the night.

Regards to reciting Surah Mulk at certain times to gain a certain benefit, it could be something from the experiences of the people.
