Question:
If someone has not paid zakat for a few years and then they become majnun. Do the outstanding zakat payments become cancelled?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Firstly, to delay Zakat without a valid reason is sinful and must be avoided. (1)
As the person became majnun after being sane, they were in the state of eligibility when they had the obligation to pay Zakat. (2)
This person will be considered Majnun Taari which is the state where one became insane after sanity. And this insanity has lasted over a year. Then, only then are they not eligible to give Zakat. (3)
Prior to this, the previous Zakat are an obligation upon the person for the period they were sane and must be completed as that is the eligibility criteria met.
