Question

Assalamu alaikum

Today in the morning I was bringing bread for breakfast but it fell down while entering the home. In a fit of rage, I kicked the bread and threw it in the dustbin. However, now I am feeling guilty and have repented but I am not satisfied yet.

Will my repentance be accepted? Please guide.

Answer:

Allah (swt) is Al-Ghafoor (The Most Forgiving) and Al-Ghaffar (The Oft-Forgiving). He loves to forgive His servants who sincerely ask Him.

Allah (swt) says-

“And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves by transgression, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins – and who can forgive sins except Allah? – and they do not persist in what they have done while they know.” (Surah Ale Imran, Verse 103)

There are three conditions to having repentance accepted:

1. Leaving the sin

2. Remorse over having committed the sin

3. Resolve never to return to the sin

4. If it involves to another human being, that he discharges his duty to the other person. (Imam Nawawi, Riyadh as-Saaliheen, Chapter on Tawbah, page 32)

Therefore, if you are truly repentant and follow the conditions outlined, you can have hope in the forgiveness and mercy of Allah (swt).
