Question:
I play a game called FIFA, in FIFA there is a team called Real Madrid , Real Madrid’s logo has a cross on it, if I play as Real Madrid in the game will I be committing shirk or kufr?

Answer:
Unfortunately video games have numerous negative effects on our youth, including;
- Distracting the player from their Salat and other acts of worship.
- Causing the the player to neglect their studies, career, business, family commitments, and other important responsibilities in life.
- Video games have an addictive nature, such that when one’s mother asks them to turn off their video game, often the player disobeys their mother, which is completely impermissible in Islam.
- Video games contain a variety of UnIslamic themes, such as Haram Music, violence, immodesty, and even Kufr/ Shirk is depicted in video games, even if such themes are shrewdly concealed by the video game creators.
In your case, the FIFA game contains UnIslamic themes such as men not covering their Awrah (i.e. their knees). In addition to this, music plays in the background of the video game. Finally, as you have mentioned, some football jerseys contain images of Crosses. The Cross is the primary symbol of Christianity, which is a blasphemous and severely misguided creed.
Hence it will be completely impermissible for you to play FIFA video games. However playing such games will not be tantamount to Shirk/Kufr as long as you believe Christianity is a false religion and that their symbols are evil. Nevertheless, such UnIslamic themes can have a negative effect on your Iman (belief in Allah Ta’ala) and your spirituality, thus to preserve your Iman, please steer clear of such games.
