Question:

Can somebody please share an article discussing the difference of opinion on what type of sleep breaks or invalidates wudu (ablution)? Specifically, I’m looking for information on the opinion that as long as one’s posterior remains on the ground, their wudu does not break, even if they lean against something. What is the position of the Author of Hidaya in this matter, his position seems contradictory?

Answer:

The opinion of the Hanafi Madhab in this regard is that one’s Wudhu will not break if they sleep in a position in which they maintain control over their posterior, such as sitting upright [1], even if they are leaning on an object such that they would fall if it were removed [2].

As for the statement found in Hidayah, this is based on the assertion that leaning generally relaxes the body and thus removes one’s control over their posterior [3]. However, the opinion in Raddul Muhtar is the more relied-upon one.
