Question:
Assalamu Alaikum, I am seeking clarification regarding the validity of the Shahada (testimony of faith) when a person feels emotionally numb. If a Muslim commits an act of kufr (disbelief) and subsequently recites the Shahada with the intention to return to Islam, is their Shahada legally valid if they do not experience an immediate emotional feeling of remorse (al-nadam)? Specifically, if the individual feels internally numb to all emotions but intellectually accepts the truth of Islam and intends to be Muslim again, does the lack of felt emotion affect the validity of their entry back into the fold of Islam? JazakAllah Khair

Answer:
The sahadah that is said with the intent of renewing one’s faith after having committed an ‘act of kufr’ is valid–even if one feels emotionally numb whilst doing so.
Moreover, it should be understood that merely committing an ‘act of kufr’ does not automatically render an individual out of the fold of Islam.
An individual only leaves the fold of Islam either through persistent denial of the uncontested tenets of faith or through persisting in and validating major sins, despite clarification. [1]
Accordingly, in the absence of such, the individual has not left Islam, and renewing one’s faith is not legally necessary, yet is something praiseworthy.
Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
