Question:

Respected ‘Ulamā how does one reply appropriately to Salafiyyah who believe that Allah is on the ‘Arsh بذاته , especially with regards to the them claiming this was the ‘Aqāid of Imām Ahmed bin Hambal?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

The belief of Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jama’ah, as articulated by the Ashari and Maturidi theologians, is that Allah SWT is absolutely transcendent from any direction, place, or physical confinement. Allah SWT says, ‘There is nothing whatsoever like unto Him’ (Surah Al-Shuraa) (1). The scholars, therefore, affirm the verse which states, ‘The Most merciful one established (His sovereignty) over the throne’  (Surah Taha) (2), but without affirming bodily sitting, location, or physical contact with the Throne. Early scholars like Imam Abu Hanifah were very clear with their stance on the ذات of Allah  (3), and later scholars like Imam Al-Ghazali mention that Allah existed when there was no place, and He is now as He always was (4). This establishes that Allah is not contained within the creation, by space or time.

With regard to the claim that Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal رحمه الله believed Allah is physically ‘on the Throne in His essence’, the early Hanbali authorities clarify that Imam Ahmed affirmed the text without modality or anthropomorphism. The established principle of the Salaf regarding such verses was ‘affirmation without asking how’ (إثبات بلا كيف) and without likening Allah to creation. It is reported regarding Imam Malik and other pious predecessors that they said, ‘Istiwa is known, its ‘how’ is unknown, believing in it is obligatory, and asking about it is an innovation’ (5). The Hanafi theologians explained that taking such expressions literally in a spatial sense leads to tajsim (anthropomorphism), which contradicts the verse of transcendence. The famous theologian Imam Al-Tahawi رحمه الله writes in his famous work on creed, ‘He is exalted above limits, ends, limbs, and instruments; the six directions do not contain Him as they do created things’ (6).

Thus, the correct response is that the Ahl al-Sunnah affirm the verse of istiwa but deny that Allah is physically located upon the Throne, since location, direction, and bodily presence are qualities of created things. The classical Hanafi and Maturidi scholars interpret such verses either by tafwid (consigning the exact meaning to Allah) or by ta’weel (figurative interpretation), such as understanding Istiwa to mean dominion, authority, or establishment of rule. This preserves both the textual evidence and the principle of divine transcendence. Therefore, attributing physical location to Allah or claiming that he is contained by the throne contradicts the established creed of the scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah.
