Question:
If someone is giving fidya for fasts that became qadha in India 40 years ago, they will give according to today’s date based on the country they are currently living in, right?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
With regards to your question, fidya is not paid based on the time or country where the fasts were missed, even if it was many years ago. Instead, it is calculated according to the current value at the time the payment is being made. So if someone missed fasts in India 40 years ago but is now living in another country, they should pay fidya based on the present cost of feeding a poor person in the place where they are currently living. The main rule is that fidya is linked to today’s price of food and local living costs, not old prices or past countries. [1]
However, if a person is unable to pay the fidya due to lack of wealth, then in such a case he should turn to Allah, make sincere tawbah, and seek His forgiveness. [2]
Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
