Question:

Assalamu alaykum mufti, how much impurity is excusable?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Impurity (najasah) is of two types:

  1. Haqiqi
  2. Hukmi

Najasah Haqiqi is actual filth such as blood, urine, feces, vomit, wine and the like.

Najasah Hukmi is ritualistic filth—a state of hadith; be it ‘Asghar’ which necessitates wudhu or ‘Abkar’ which necessitates ghusl.

Najasah Haqiqi is further divided into ghalidhah (heavy filth) or khafifah (light filth).

Najasah ghalidha is excused to the extent of a dirham, whilst najasah khafifah is excused to the extent of a quarter of one’s garment or body part.

Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
