Question:
Assalamu Alaikum,
My question is that if a person runs a tea business and, in order to create a special and unique taste, as well as to reduce cost, mixes different qualities of tea (which differ in price from one another) using a certain formula—this process is known as blending—then according to Shariah, is this permissible and acceptable or not?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Islamic business ethics require a trader to be transparent, honest and accurate in regards to the nature of what they sell, and to not mislead their customers when they purchase a product. It should be made clear to the customer exactly what they are purchasing, including details such as the ingredients of the product, the amount, etc. It is not permissible for a seller to hide defects or components of what they are selling, as this would constitute both deception and gharar (uncertainty). If a customer is happy to purchase the blend of tea at the price you offer, after having access to the ingredient list, then the transaction will be valid, since the customer will be aware of what they were purchasing.
Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
