Question:
Assalaamoalaikum.
What’s the outcome for Muslims who commit suicide?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
In Islam, suicide is not allowed and is a very big sin. The Qur’an says, “And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is Merciful to you” (4:29). The Prophet ﷺ said that anyone who kills themselves – whether by sword, poison, or hanging – will be punished in the Hereafter in the same way.[1]
So it is clear that a Muslim who commits suicide will be held accountable because life is a trust from Allah.
At the same time it is important to understand that Allah’s mercy is very great, and He knows the condition of a person’s heart. If someone was very sad, stressed, or mentally ill, Allah may forgive them. So, suicide is always wrong, but Islam also teaches us to help and support people who are struggling, to be patient, rely on Allah, and get help instead of harming themselves.[2]

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلاَبَةَ، عَنْ ثَابِتِ بْنِ الضَّحَّاكِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ” مَنْ حَلَفَ بِمِلَّةٍ غَيْرِ الإِسْلاَمِ كَاذِبًا مُتَعَمِّدًا فَهُوَ كَمَا قَالَ، وَمَنْ قَتَلَ نَفْسَهُ بِحَدِيدَةٍ عُذِّبَ بِهِ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ ”. وَقَالَ حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مِنْهَالٍ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، حَدَّثَنَا جُنْدَبٌ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ فِي هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ فَمَا نَسِينَا، وَمَا نَخَافُ أَنْ يَكْذِبَ جُنْدَبٌ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ” كَانَ بِرَجُلٍ جِرَاحٌ فَقَتَلَ نَفْسَهُ فَقَالَ اللَّهُ بَدَرَنِي عَبْدِي بِنَفْسِهِ حَرَّمْتُ عَلَيْهِ الْجَنَّةَ ”.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِۦ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدِ ٱفْتَرَىٰٓ إِثْمًا عَظِيمًا
