Question:
Is there a fatwa pertaining to a person who starts their ramadhan in a country starting late and travels to a country wherein Eid is early, therefore only completing 28 fasts in total?
I vaguely remember coming across a well written answer a few years ago, but the question has come up on a few occasions this year. What should this person do?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
If a person travels to another country during Ramadan, he will be regarded as an inhabitant of the country he has travelled to.
Accordingly, if Eid is celebrated early in the country he has travelled to, such that he has only completed 28 fasts, he must celebrate Eid with the people of that country. After Eid, he will perform one Qadha fast to complete 29 fasts of Ramadan. [2]
Hence, the minimum number of fasts in Ramadan is 29. [1] This person will disregard when his country of origin celebrates Eid. Rather, he will celebrate Eid with the country he has travelled to, even if it means that he has only fasted a total of 28 days in Ramadan. Thereafter, he will perform one Qadha fast to bring his total number of fasts to 29. [3]
