Question:
Mufti saheb if by mistake I used a scented wet wipe what’s the penalty?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
A person in Ihram must avoid perfume and scented products. A scented wet wipe normally contains fragrance, and if that fragrance is transferred onto the body or clothing, it comes under the ruling of applying perfume [1].
In the Hanafi madhhab, the penalty depends on the amount of perfume used and the extent of the area affected. A scented wipe usually has a small amount of perfume. Therefore, consideration will be given to the extent of the area affected. If a whole limb was affected, dam (the sacrifice of one sheep or goat in the Haram precinct) will be necessary. If only a small area of a limb or body part was affected, sadaqah (giving charity equal to one Sadaqat al-Fitr amount to eligible recipients) will be necessary [2]. The ruling will be same regardless whether it was intentional or by mistake [3].
In conclusion, if a person in Ihram mistakenly used a scented wet wipe, he should wash off the scent immediately. If the fragrance affected a complete limb or body part, dam will be necessary. If it affected only a small area, sadaqah will be necessary. If no fragrance or scented substance actually transferred onto the body or clothing, then no penalty will be necessary.
Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
