The Ruling On Sitting For Salah When A Wound Bleeds During Movement

Fatwa ID: 08957

Answered by Maulana Abdool Taheer Hussein Tagaully

Question:

If someone can sit and stand normally, but they have a cut on their knee that only bleeds when they bend their leg, can they sit and pray salah?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

In the Hanafi madhhab, wudhu breaks when blood flows from the wound beyond its point of exit [1]. If the blood merely appears on the surface of the cut and does not flow, wudhu will not break. Therefore, even if a small amount of blood appears while changing postures, wudhu remains valid as long as it does not flow. However, if changing posture causes the blood to exit and flow, then wudhu will break, and the Salaah will also become invalid [2] [3].

Accordingly, if the blood flows only when standing, bending the knee, or going into sajdah, but it remains controlled when the person prays sitting, then it will be permissible for him to sit and pray with gestures. He should avoid the posture that causes the bleeding, keep the injured leg in a position that prevents the blood from flowing, and perform rukoo’ and sajdah by gestures [4].

In conclusion, if bending the knee causes flowing blood, the person may sit and pray with gestures. But if the blood only appears and does not flow, his wudhu does not break, and he should pray normally as far as he is able.

Only Allah ﷻ knows best.
